Topic 4.9 Cardiovascular Fitness for Safety and Work

In this lesson in your textbook, you learned that aerobic dance instructors and lifeguards need good cardiovascular fitness. But there are many other jobs that require this part of fitness, including ranchers, professional athletes, and PE educators. Even people who don’t do a lot of physical activity during their normal day will need to use cardiovascular fitness to meet the demands of certain situations. For example, people who work on the upper stories of tall buildings may have to climb stairs in emergencies or if the elevator is out of order.

Cardiovascular fitness can also help you to be safe. In this lesson in your textbook you learned that cardiovascular fitness can help you to shovel snow after a snow storm or fill sandbags during flooding. Changing a flat tire or running for help, if needed, will demand good cardiovascular fitness.

The photos below show ranchers, figure skaters, and physical educators—three jobs that require good cardiovascular fitness. Click on each photo to learn more about that career.
