Topic 5.2 Socioeconomics and Physical Activity

National surveys show that physical activity is related to socioeconomic status. Socioeconomic status is determined by age, sex, education, income, and ethnicity. The national Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) is a national survey that asks Americans about lifestyle behaviors that affect health. You can visit the BRFSS Web site and see what percentage of adults in the United States, your home state, or other states participate in healthy and unhealthy behaviors. You can see for yourself how physical activity levels are affected by age, sex, education, income, and ethnicity. The Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System allows you to look at the health behaviors of teens.
