Topic 3.6 Body Image Disorders

Body image disorders often lead to eating disorders. Most people associate body image disorders and eating disorders with females, but males experience body image disorders too. Men with body image disorders, similar to women with the condition, have intense fears of gaining weight. However, more men than women have muscle dysphoria, which means they fear that they are too skinny or nonmuscular. To deal with this, they may work out excessively, use steroids, or develop rigid dietary rules or restrictions. This often leads to eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa and bulimia (see chapter 13). Can you see how someone with a "perfect body" may not be healthy?
