Topic 2.8 Avoiding Injury and Preventing Soreness

As you learned in the FIT Facts box on page 34 of your textbook, you may experience Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS) after doing a sport for the first time or returning to a sport or activity after a long layoff from participation. Sports that require quick changes in direction, fast stopping, and explosive starting such as football, soccer, and tennis can often produce the microscopic muscle tears that cause DOMS. Doing too much too soon promotes DOMS. Starting gradually when you train for a sport can help prevent DOMS.

On pages 35, 36, and 37 of your text, you learned about "Risky Exercises." For more information about risky exercises, click here.
