Topic 13.6 Strength Exercise for Healthy Body Composition

Resistance training helps you maintain a healthy level of body fat in two ways: First, by engaging in resistance training, you burn calories. Second, by engaging in resistance training, you can build muscle mass (size). Muscle tissue is metabolic (energy-burning) tissue, and when you increase muscle mass you increase the amount of metabolic tissue in your body. The benefit of increasing muscle mass is that you burn more calories at rest and during exercise. Increasing your calorie-burning capacity will help you balance your energy intake (eating calories) with energy expenditure (burning calories). Along with regular aerobic activity, resistance training can help you maintain a healthy body weight and prevent increases in body fat. Maintaining a healthy body weight will help you look and feel your best.
