Topic 12.3 Circuit Training Programs

Circuit training programs are popular for two reasons. The most important reason is that circuit training programs can save time. Most people list time as the biggest reason for not exercising. When organized properly, a circuit training program can be done in less than 30 minutes and can target all of the major muscle groups. Most people can get general muscular strength or endurance benefits by performing a circuit training program two to three times per week. Another reason circuit training programs are popular is that participants can get some aerobic fitness benefits. The short rest time between exercises in a circuit training program can keep the heart rate elevated in the target zone throughout the workout. This may lead to increases in aerobic fitness early on in a training program. As you become more experienced, the circuit training program will probably not overload your aerobic system. The principle of specificity suggests that if you want aerobic fitness benefits, you need to perform aerobic fitness exercises.
