Topic 11.7 Resistance Training for Teens

For many years researchers have been investigating the risks and benefits of resistance training among youth. The current consensus is that progressive resistance training (PRT), when performed correctly, can lead to increased muscular strength and endurance in youth. The benefits of increased muscular strength and endurance may include improved performance in sports and recreation, improved appearance, and decreased risk of injury. Young girls can benefit from PRT by increasing bone-mineral density. Increasing bone-mineral density early in life can reduce the risk for developing the disease osteoporosis later in life.
