What does my child’s BMI number mean?

Basically, the body mass index (BMI) is a measurement that looks at a person’s weight-to-height ratio. If someone has a large weight-to-height ratio, it could mean that he has excess body fat. As a parent, it is important to know what BMI category your child falls into. If your child is categorized as overweight or obese based on his or her BMI, it may be time to see a health care professional for a professional assessment and guidance. Encouraging safe and enjoyable physical activities and healthy eating are sound approaches to helping a child who is overweight or obese.
