Why do you think that soccer (called "football" in most countries) is one of the most popular and most played sports in the world? If you think the answer has to do with equipment, facilities, and climate, you’re on the right track. Soccer requires very little equipment (a ball), soccer can be played almost anywhere (indoor, outdoor, in the street), and soccer can be played in almost any weather (although snow makes the ball hard to find). Soccer is also a great sport for developing cardiovascular fitness, muscular endurance, agility, and eye–foot coordination. No wonder so many people play soccer!
Can you think of other sports that can be played with few pieces of equipment, almost anywhere, and in many different climates?
Can you think of active recreation activities that meet these criteria? We’ll start you off with one example: hiking. You can hike in the many national, state, and regional parks near you. Hiking doesn’t cost much money; it doesn’t require any special equipment beyond appropriate footwear; and if you dress for the weather, it can be done year round.
