Since 1980, the United States has established health goals for the nation. These goals are presented at the beginning of a decade and are titled Healthy People followed by the decade of interest. There are Healthy People goals for Americans at every stage in their life. The health goals of the nation are determined based on the health needs of the population. The health needs of the population are determined through nationwide surveys of youth and adults.

Healthy People 2010 challenges individuals, communities, and professionals to take specific steps to ensure that good health, as well as long life, are enjoyed by all. Among the leading health indicators for Healthy People 2010 are increasing physical activity and reducing overweight and obesity.
